Review of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) by Jess L — 06 Feb 2013
Absolutely incredible film; the screenplay is original and intense, the performances are amazing; Bette David blows me away in this creepy role and she plays it to perfection. Refreshing to see Crawford in such a submissive role. From start to end this film keeps you on the edge, shot beautifully, mostly in the sister's home the audience feels their isolation. The back story of the two sisters makes for a perfect set up for the present day when revenge is continually served up, sometimes in the form of a bird on the lunch tray... pure genius.
Despite the darkness of this film and the evil doings of Davis' character, you can't help but feel sorry for her at the end of the film as you realise how far gone she really is in holding onto the past. This also makes for some unexpected though thoroughly welcome humourous moments in the film.
A deeply effective and powerful psychological thriller from 1962 that still leaves its mark.
