Review of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) by Adrian B — 13 Sep 2010
A bone-chilling film from 1962, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane is my second favourite film from 1962 (after The Manchurian Candidate). Two retired actresses (Crawford and Davis) live in house. Crawford's character, Blanche, is paralyzed and wheel-chair due an accident decades before while her sister, Baby Jane, takes care of her, reluctantly, abusively, and poorly.
It is a vicious, cynical, disturbing film that samples elements, at least for me, of Psycho and Sunset Boulevard. Davis and Crawford are excellent, and Victor Bruno's performance is also very good.
Very tense film with, with many momemnts of humour, especially when Blanche is served both her pet bird and rat for meals. NOTE: During the opening, which are ten minutes into the film, quite a few of the film are not readible.
There two small and the blend in with the picture, a bizarre production problem.
