I really don't know what to make of this movie. the cinematography was cool and the overall art direction was vivid and imaginative. Williams and Sciorra make a rather unlikely couple, but I got a real sense of chemistry from them.

I liked the narrative style and general story arc, particularly the parallel between the beginning and end. there were certain moments and lines of dialogue that had a truly beautiful poignancy to them.

even given all that, I didn't much like the movie. it tries way too hard to be sentimental and dramatic and it usually fails. the afterlife fantasy is bizarre and the metaphysics behind it are sloppy, disjointed and confusing.

plot twists are just as confusing and not at all satisfying. there's also just something about the movie as a whole that gives off a very unsettling vibe--like it's lulling you into a false sense of security and contentment.

in the end, lots to like, but it doesn't quite outweigh the stuff to dislike.
