Review of What Dreams May Come (1998) by Jeffrey M — 04 Sep 2011
Having seen What Dreams May Come when it came out in 1998, I had only an extremely vague recollection of it, and certainly didn't fully appreciate it at the time. Revisiting it, I see just how visually stunning, especially for when it came out, the film is.
It is imaginative, inventive, and often captivating. The plot itself doesn't reinvent the wheel, however, and the film disappointedly settles for a studio-friendly ending. My biggest complaint is with the film's theology, which is muddled and not fleshed out.
Still, it raises big questions, which, combined with the awesome imagery, makes it well worth watching.
