Review of What About Bob? (1991) by Ben H — 24 Dec 2012
"What About Bob?" is a 1991 comedy classic starring Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss. Defiantly, without a doubt, one of Murray's best roles as well as being a great vehicle for Dreyfuss to inch into comedic roles.
Murray plays Bob, a psychiatric patient with phobias of, well, just about everything. He is referred to Dr. Leo Marvin, played wonderfully by Dreyfuss, by his former psychiatrist. Dr. Marvin has just written a self help book and is about to go on a family vacation, but first he meets with Bob and tells him to read his book while he is gone. Bob, of course, is worried about what will happen while the doctor is away. Comforting him, Dr. Marvin, leaves Bob and heads on to enjoy a month with the family.
This is where it gets fun. Bob, being crazy and such, tracks Dr. Marvin down and heads to where his family is on vacation. The entire movie is priceless. Bob is loved by everyone, with Dr. Marvin growing more and more angry and upset at everything going on. In the end, Dr. Marvin is in deed the crazy one.
Bob is a loveable goofball, and the rest of the cast is just amazing. An all around hilarious comedy for the whole family. If you enjoyed such classics such as Groundhog Day, then you will defiantly enjoy this movie. I gave this a perfect score because, frankly, it's one of the best Bill Murray comedies of all time. The plot was perfect, the film shot just right, everything.
