Review of Whale Rider (2003) by Kimberly M — 25 Aug 2008
I'm an anthropology major, so this movie is a huge happy for me. I love how it illustrates the struggle between tradition and meeting with the changes of today. Pai's eventual role as a tribal leader was a break from tradition, but one born from the necessity of a shrinking tribal life and that she was the best choice.
Sometimes tradition must bow to change, and this is a great example of how it can be good, even if it's not straight lined with tradition.
