This is a heartworming story about tradition and culture of Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand. By a 1000-year old tradition, Maori beleive that the first-born male child is directly related to Paikea, their ancestor who was saved by the whale.
Movie describes struggles and obstacle that 11-year old girl named Pai is facing to be accepted in a male dominated culture and her journey to become the new chief, the Whale Rider.
