Review of Whale Rider (2003) by Diogo S — 11 Feb 2011
To be sure, a quiet film like Whale Rider can easily get lost amongst the sizzle and glam of the modern day motion picture industry. However, this films quiet inner voice booms over the current variety of overzealous, lambastingly loud empty films being put out today.
The gentle strokes of the films canvas are displayed in the vibrant colors of its characters from the tradition mired grandfather to the inocuous "prodigal son" and finally and most colorfully the grandaughter whose faith in herself and her traditions trancends a primative patriarichal society.
Watch for the dreamy symbolism that weaves in with the insightful story that deals with human nature. Let yourself be absorbed and woven in with the tapestry of this heartwarming story filled with hope and transcendance.
Mostly, enjoy the acting...so simple...so quiet...so real. Particularly the deep and real portrayal by Keisha Castle-Hughes who plays the granddaughter. This is one film for EVERY collection!!!
