Review of Whale Rider (2003) by Robert T — 26 Jan 2008
A wonderful piece of work! It was fresh and unique! The film started out a little slow, but it gradually got better, especially toward the second half. There were several long and boring moments, but it did not derailed the film at all.
The film was also a learning experience as it brought us into the realm of the old Maori culture, which I'm guessing is fading away. Anyway, the film's cast was good, though nothing to rave about, but I have to give bug kudos to Keisha Castle-Hughes.
Her performance was quite superb, and she definitely deserved her Oscar-nomination! Though the film was greatly titled "Whale Rider," it seemed the word "whale" was predominately on screen toward the end of the movie, which was also one of the best scenes in the whole film, but I was hoping for more whale sequences.
Overall, an entertaining and depressing piece of work! One of the freshest foreign films out there.
