Review of Whale Rider (2003) by Rohan G — 07 Aug 2008
Moving film based on an old Maori legend. The little girl gives a cute and affecting performance. Nicely shot, I especially liked the score, which is by Lisa Gerrard (Gladiator). I thought the film could have been a bit shorter, but its a well-told story nonetheless.
The climax is what really makes the film, however. Its beautifully and movingly done. The only criticism I have of it is that you know where the film is leading to from the very beginning. There are no surprises here other than to see how its all done.
Of course, the film doesn't try to surprise you, but when a film becomes too predictable, you can lose interest in it as I did during certain parts of the movie.
