A slow paced drama about the ccomming of age of New Zealander boys under the direction of clan leader-elder at a summer camp like place or after school community cntre, learning there culture watys, dance and comat techniques in kata and common sense. The elder person has a son (artist ? intelectual intent) and a grand daughter that through liniage has risen to srive for his apprciation as a person, rightfully so. Still to young to know her place, she has fun outdoing some of the boys and has squabbles with her grandfarther as he has little time for her, because of this.

At an encounter with beconing whales, drawing to the dreamlike conclution in climactic finalle... the village folk rallyto save them when communication with the whales is so spiritual that it opens up enlightenment to you for the movie prior to these events in regards to communication.

Regrets and turning back being the only thing to do at this stage when 'keep on going' is the only thing to do.
