Review of Whale Rider (2003) by Lauree K — 18 Mar 2010
A teenage girl in a small New Zealand island tribal community fights against a strict, patriarchal believe system to find her destiny. I'm absolutely stunned by the island setting, the tribal traditions juxtaposed against a modern world, and, most of all the beauty, grace and sympathetic charm of Keisha Castle-Hughes who plays Paikea.
Favorite scene: Paikea stands on stage in front of her classmates to receive an award for her performing of ancient ritual dance and song, then cries in shame when she realizes her grandfather, the current tribal chief, hasn't shown up.
