Review of Whale Rider (2003) by Daniel S — 19 Jan 2011
Its overall thematic trajectory is kind of transparent, but on the same token the film doesn't pull any punches or try to surprise you--it's a simple story, well told and well performed. The feminist element is mildly compelling, as is the commentary on the role of tradition in spiritual communities, but what really makes the film is Castle-Hughes' performance: it's sweet and powerful and even heartwrenching (Paikea's speech dedicated to Koro is the emotional centerpiece of the film and makes the whole experience more than worthwhile).
