Review of Whale Rider (2003) by Adam F — 28 May 2011
I have mixed feelings. First, what you encounter in this movie is a magnificient play by the main female child character. Second is a touching spectacle of what happens when a myth slowly dies in people and then when it is reenergized. But you also have a display of a whole bunch of people under the terror and debilitation by a bullheaded grandpa, redemption from which everybody celebrates gleefully. I also didn't like oversimplifications in outlining genders here.
To my palate the latter two spoilt the movie a bit like too much salt in a lovely soup.
