Review of Wet Hot American Summer (2001) by James H — 15 Aug 2010
This throwback to summer camp movies of the early 1980s, like Meatballs, begins as a loving tribute to the genre, hitting all of the notes perfectly. Director David Wain perfectly captures the look and feel of the not just the 80s, but the films themselves.
The cast, comprised mostly of actors from MTV's The State, give fun and energetic performances; everyone is clearly enjoying making this movie particularly Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Paul Rudd, Michael Showalter, and a scene stealing Christopher Meloni (Stabler!).
Yet, as the film progresses, situations grow more and more ridiculous, and it moves from loving tribute to absurd parody. Initially this is a little jarring, but as the film progresses it is, in its own bizarre way, logical.
