Review of Wet Hot American Summer (2001) by Peter F — 26 Feb 2012
This bizarre 80s parody has become a cult fave over the years since it was released, yet Wet Hot American Summer is still likely to only appeal to an acquired taste. It's unabashedly mean-spirited (at least two kids die for laughs in this thing), and the sense of humor is intentionally esoteric.
That said, fans of the irreverent humor of certain shows from Adult Swim and Comedy Central are almost certain to get a real kick out of Wet Hot American Summer, as as long as you're in on the joke then there's nary a lame gag in the film.
It's one of the few spoof movies that feels both cartoony, yet holds a firm legging in reality as well. With a prequel/sequel reportedly in the works, lets hope there are no attempts to make a more commercial picture!
