Review of Wet Hot American Summer (2001) by Charles R — 07 Jul 2013
Ignore the 'rotten' rating on this one folks, this is an easy 5/5 star-shaped popcorn buckets. Unlike the trashy American Pie franchise (which was boosted by only one really funny actor, Eugene Levy), this comedian-stacked lovable 'days of summer' time capsule should have been the summer-camp parody to last.
.. but for some reason it flopped with the critics in 2001 (and hard). Looking back, I can see why this now-classic cast might not have had much of an impact on its target audience or critics (Bradley Cooper, Elizabeth Banks, Amy Poehler, Michael Ian Black, and especially Michael Showalter were all mostly bit players at the time) but to deny the hilarity of David Hyde Pierce's geeky 'associate' professor, Janeane Garfalo's sweet but shy camp counselor, Molly Shannon's support group of kids, Paul Rudd's sleazy male-slut scenes, and a buttload of kids who look like they're having the time of their life? Seriously?? I'm outright balking at the turgid 'pro' critics who didn't find this 'cult'-classic (ie plain old funny-ass movie) to invoke at least a chortle or two.
2001 was seriously the year of the wet blanket... *sigh*.
