Review of Wet Hot American Summer (2001) by Joe W — 09 Sep 2013
Cult favorite? This movie needs to drink the rest of the Kool-Aid and die already.
Twelve years later, people still wax poetic about this movie, and twelve years later I finally got around to watching it. I wish I would have left this travesty on the shelf.
I understand this is supposed to be a parody, but spoofs are supposed to be funny, right? Sure, it's been a while since I watched Meatballs, but I never watch Westerns and Blazing Saddles is hilarious to me.
This "comedy" movie is lacking in jokes, so much so that halfway through I found myself hoping the Sandman would come dancing through my front door and give my TV the hook. Horrible writing.
How can so many great actors/comedians make such a big comedy flop? I chuckled at about two scenes, but figuring all the other funny movies/TV shows these actors have been in, this movie should have been twenty times better.
The plot is haphazard. While spoofs don't really need to make sense, it still needs to drive the movie in a straight line so you don't get lost. Don't blink during this movie.
Half of star for the great casting, long before a lot of these actors were famous. Another half for the two chuckles. Otherwise, I wouldn't watch this on free TV.
