Review of Wet Hot American Summer (2001) by Sean N — 16 Jan 2009
I would consider Wain a very smart comedy writer. He's not political or interested in getting any important messages across but he excels in a sort of straightforwardness in just wanting to make people laugh.
Wet Hot American Summer thrives off of random humor that is perfect because it doesn't stray to the point of being 'too random' (yes that makes sense!) he also relies on classic slapstick, clever puns, and a thing for directing his actors/friends with exaggerated expressions and lingual humor that is pretty hard to explain.
I can see why people wouldn't find this funny or great: because they're probably stupid. That's pretty harsh but it's probably true. Wain is original, talented and underrated. And that also means he's too funny/smart for mainstream America but that's okay, because they don't deserve him.
