Review of Wet Hot American Summer (2001) by Zoe S — 30 Jul 2015
This movie is awful. When I was watching it I didn't feel like I was watching teenagers at camp. I attended camp ages 11-18 and it is nothing like this movie, it felt more like I was watching a vanity project for a bunch of B list comedians of the early 2000's that can't act to save their lives jaunting around a camp.
I laughed only once during this whole movie. It was the scene during dinner after the secret gay wedding in the woods, one of the gay kid's two friends came bursting in and I was expecting like a public humiliation or calling him and his now husband out.
But, instead they wheeled in a massive box and said "It's a chase lounge! We didn't know if you already had one but we still have the receipt." That gave me a chuckle. While viewing I was constantly checking how much longer of the movie I had left.
Most of the councillors are horrible to the kids they're supposed to be looking after. The romantic subplots are dry and obvious. The moral at the end is mean spirited. Its trying to be a parody to the whole "Finding Yourself at Camp" story that I don't find to be all that parody worthy.
Teenagers are a satire of themselves. If you do want to watch a funny, entertaining, and CLASSIC film about teenagers at camp for some nostalgic charm or just to see what camp is really like, I would recommend the 1979 movie Meatballs.
Bill Murray plays the camp director and it hits everything perfectly. Wet Hot American Summer wishes it was Meatballs.
