Review of Westworld (1973) by Nathan N — 26 Nov 2008
RIP Crichton.
This is kind of a precusor to Jurassic Park; both are about amusement parks created by technology/profit-incensed scientists who don't know what they got is about to go haywire. Where Spielberg is the better director all around, Crichton scores points for an original, near-classic sci-fi concept and some wicked satire. The last 25 minutes, with it just a man-vs-machine chase with Brynner a stone-cold killing machine targeting Benjamin, is ruthless in its precision.
Only major liabilities, too *short*, should've been longer, not enough time in Rome, and the transition from everything-honky-dory to chaos is a little quick. Otherwise cool stuff.
