Review of Westworld (1973) by Sol H — 04 Aug 2010
It's like if Jurassic Park had been an episode of Star Trek, which is certainly not a bad thing.
I loved this film. It was like a rough-around-the-edges version of about 5 other films that I love such as The Terminator and of course Jurassic Park, but this one came first so you can't hold those films against it.
It has all the fun of the wild west but keeps it from being boring by adding in robots.
It's shot like a horror film, at least towards the end -and as a result, it gets genuinely unsettling. It's one of the most brilliantly tense films I've ever seen and I found a few sequences vaguely disturbing in the way that zombie films used to affect me when I was younger.
The overall concept is brilliant. You can't take it 100% seriously, it's just hokey science fiction fun. Other aspects such as the art design and direction are also great.
The one complaint about this amazingly engaging film is its terribly weak ending. I still love it overall, but if the ending had been as good as the rest of the film, it'd get far above an 8/10 from me. It's the best film I've watched excluding cinema trips so far this year. Hell, it might be longer, I can't remember the last one I enjoyed that much.
Personal enjoyment: 8/10 (but a bloody high 8/10).
Actual quality as a film: 8/10.
