Review of Westworld (1973) by Wade H — 06 Oct 2014
Entertaining futuristic thriller-drama. Surely the movie that influenced a host of later movies, the most obvious being Terminator and all its sequels.
Not perfect - it has a few plot-holes - but you don't mind them too much as you are happy to be swept along by the story.
And what a story it is. Set in a believable future, the background and setup are good, and very interesting. The plot is developed well: methodically and piece by piece, without giving much away. You know something is going to happen, but you're not sure what exactly.
When the movie does reach its climax, its quite a ride, featuring one of the baddest bad guys ever.
That bad guy is played by Yul Brynner. He gives a great performance as an evil robot. No, that's not sarcasm. He is truly scary in the role.
Good performances too by Richard Benjamin and James Brolin. Dick Van Patten provides the comedic moments.
