Review of Westfront 1918 (1930) by Brian B — 25 Feb 2018
While many of the images in this film which were praised back in their time for being unsettling lost their bite with time, there are still some standouts such as a dead soldier's hand sticking out of the mud, the tank scene, and its ending.
Even though, like other reviewers have noted, it's light on character development, I felt like some of the characters had likable qualities to them such as the student for his bravery and Karl due to his experience during his leave.
I also liked the acting. Since many of the actors were veterans, their twitches at explosions seemed to recall the terror they once knew on the battlefield. Overall, some scenes lost their impact with time, but plenty more scenes make this an enjoyable experience.
