Review of West Side Story (1961) by Daniel S — 15 Aug 2010
I canâ??t believe this movie won best picture in 1961. What happened to Breakfast at Tiffanyâ??s and the Hustler? While the music is good, the acting is sub-par, and the story is recycled and just plain dumb.
The theme of love without boundaries is unrealistic, insulting, thoughtless, and very selfish. It was dumb when Shakespeare wrote it as Romeo and Juliet: his worst play and the reason so many people hate Shakespeare and their high school literature teacher to date.
Imagine if West Side Story had been a reinterpretation of Anthony and Cleopatra? Think of the boundaries to love in that movie? Present and accounted for in the name of Caesar Augustus. How cool would that have been? Also, since when does a two inch knife to the ribs kill you instantaneously? Lame.
Move along.
