Review of West Side Story (1961) by Daniel L — 23 Mar 2009
I'm not anti-musical. I enjoyed the Sound of Music. Singing in the Rain wasn't that bad. Heck, I even liked Chicago pretty well. Unfortunately, this movie made me doze several times, and I was even dreaming about sleeping.
All of that after I had slept over 10 hours just a few hours before, so I shouldn't have been sleepy. There was just something so unrealistic about tough inner-city gangs being such a huge threat to society, all the while dancing around and singing.
I know that's what a musical is all about, but most of the musicals I've enjoyed, the singing and dancing at least seemed to fit better with the story. I do think Natalie Wood was stunningly beautiful.
And some of the acting was very good. But overall, I have to get West Side Story a thumbs down.
