Review of West Side Story (1961) by Tuba M — 01 Jul 2010
My favourite Musical, West side Story is a modern, well the '59 version anyway of Romeo & Juliet with music. Great dancing and award winning songs make this film great, with fantastic performances all round from Natalie Wood as Maria and Rita Moreno in a standout performance.
Robert Wise directed this film about to rival gangs The Jets against the Puerto Rican gang the Sharks, Tony (Richard Beymer) has taken a backseat in his gang he started with his pal Riff (Russ Tamblyn) but is asked to come back into the gang he ends of meeting Maria (Natalie Wood) and falls in love with her instantly trouble is her brother is the leader of the rival gang The Sharks, Tony smitten of course thinks he can stop the gangs from fighting.
Standout songs for me The Jet song, America and Cool.
