Probably my favorite pure musical, West Side Story is a beautiful film to watch. The dancing and choreography may be humorous to some (due to it all being from young tough guys) but really the dancing is brilliant.
This has the best choreography I've ever seen. On top of that, of course the music and the lyrics are excellent. Every song is memorable. It's filled with outstanding supporting performances, including Rita Moreno's Oscar-winning role, which isn't even my favorite.
Wise as director also plays with light to make it a profound look on young love. I would almost go so far to say that this rivals Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet (what the musical was based on) in the brilliant and dramatic insight on the subject.
