Review of West Side Story (1961) by Roni A — 10 Jun 2012
My first movie inspiration was West Side Story. When it came out in the early 60s, there had not been another film like it: a musical with every single song a standalone work of perfection, the depiction of tough New York street gangs via ballet and yet somehow being blievable, a Romeo & Juliet love story aginst the backdrop of New York City with the feel of the city woven authenically throughout the film.
All the right colors, few yet powerful words, compelling in every way. I saw this film about 20 times and fell in love with Natalie Wood forever. My only complaint was the casting of Richard Beymer as Tony.
It just didn't work for me.
