West Side Story is often referred to as the best musical of all time because it does a rare thing. it expands upon the stage adaptation and makes it better (at least in my opinion). The dancing is bigger, the cast is born to play their parts, certain songs are re-arranged to better fit scenes, and the narrative structure plays out perfectly due to that.

This movie earned those 10 Academy Awards for a reason, it is that influential and that amazing.
