Review of West Is West (1920) by Nick G — 12 Apr 2011
Plenty of laugh-out-loud moments throughout, but I left feeling quite sad. Although the father gets some kind of redemption by the end, in his pride he has nevertheless left a wake of brokenness behind him.
As a movie it was well shot with some good actors but choppily edited and somewhat confused as to what it was about -- at various points it played with themes of identity, race, adolescence, father-son relations, multiple wives, cultural infelicities, and colonialism, but not in a coherent or sustained way.
