Review of We're the Millers (2013) by Mitchell L — 29 Mar 2014
Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber (DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story (2004)), this road movie comedy is Up In Smoke (1978) meets National Lampoon's Vacation (1983), but it's a comedy with a lot of heart, and a lot of belly-laughs along the way.
But this is a film with a good little ensemble cast who play off one another brilliantly, and it has some good observational humour. Small-time pot dealer David Clark (Jason Sudeikis) is robbed of all his pot and money, so drug lord Brad Gurdlinger (Ed Helms) offers him a chance to get it all back, by smuggling "a smidge of marijuana" from across the border in Mexico.
To try and fool the border guards, David creates a fake family consisting of stripper Rose (Jennifer Aniston), 18 year old virgin Kenny (Will Poulter) and teenage runaway Casey (Emma Roberts) to pose as a fake family.
They become The Millers, and they get over into Mexico in an RV, and they go to get the product, only to find out there's 2 tons of it, and that Gurdlinger has double cross David, but David won't give in.
It's a very funny film, and it has some crackerjack dialogue and some funny sequences, even if it does descend into gross-out bits every now and again, it still manages to be an upbeat delight from start to finish.
Thurber hasn't done much since DodgeBall, and it's great to see him back making films, lets hope he sticks around.
