Review of We're the Millers (2013) by Tyler R — 02 May 2014
Jason Sudeikis doesn't get much in the way of leading man material, which is a shame because he's pretty hilarious. In the case of We're the Millers, he is funny...in spurts, only because the writing is rough around the edges and pretty bland.
The movie follows a drug dealer who gets the help from a runaway, a stripper, and his abandoned neighbor to help him smuggle drugs over the border. The idea has promise, but it's squandered almost immediately by relying heavily on cliches and predictable plotting.
Don't get me wrong, there are some funny scenes, but they are few and far between. The rest of the cast does well enough with what they're given, but outside of Jason Sudeikis, the only real standout is Nick Offerman, who's dry sense of humor really shines here.
Overall, this wasn't a horrible film, but just a bland one. Which is a shame considering everyone involved.
