Review of Wendy and Lucy (2008) by G G — 21 Feb 2009
A sparse, quiet drama that follows Wendy (Michelle Williams, fantastic) as she travels from Indiana to Alaska in hopes of finding employment. After her car breaks down in a small Oregon town, Wendy loses her dog and only friend, Lucy, and spends the rest of the movie trying to locate her.
Director Kelly Reichardt frames her actors close-up, and Williams - who was so memorable as the neglected wife of Heath Ledger in "Brokeback Mountain" - is one of Oscar's criminal oversights.
"Wendy and Lucy" may sound slight, but its themes of loneliness and sacrifice are universal and deeply moving.
