Review of Wendy and Lucy (2008) by Miles W — 29 Jul 2009
Well, it made me sob, and not many films make me care enough to do that. I really, really cared about the plight of Wendy in this film and it just goes to prove that in most films, character is everything.
In fact, you find yourself caring about this girl and her dog so much that it's heartbreaking to watch her in trouble, but by the end the film bravely takes a turn that is both sad and heartwarming as Wendy faces the harshness of life but also its possibility and the kindness of people.
Like Reichardt's excellent 'Old Joy' or Coppola's 'Lost In Translation', some people may inevitably think this film has no story, but it's bursting with emotion and beauty and worth about a dozen or more of the kind of bloated-budget films we've had to endure this year. Inspiring.
