Review of Wendy and Lucy (2008) by Darcy L — 16 Aug 2009
My mom used to say, "If you can't say anything nice...don't say anything" and believe me, I tried to enjoy this film. Unfortunately this film drew the short straw in nearly every way. Short on plot development and drama, short on emotional arc and character development, short on action, intrigue etc. Maybe that was the point. The promise of the film being a meditation on the breakdown of society is also lost in a script about next to nothing.
One star however goes to Michelle Williams for her 'interesting' and subtle performance as the down on her luck Wendy. It was pretty hard to have any empathy for her character. I mean who goes on a cross-state trip to Alaska in a beat up car with only $500?
One start definitely goes to the Dog, Lucy. I haven't seen that, ahem breed of canine acting since Littlest Hobo. Woof, Woof!
