Review of Wendy and Lucy (2008) by Nicholas H — 14 Apr 2010
I don't know if 'minimalist' is the best way to describe "Wendy and Lucy." 'Ridiculously powerful' might be a better phrase it. The title characters are Wendy, a young woman heading to Alaska, and her faithful dog Lucy.
The story is a very simple one: Wendy is going to Alaska to find a job. Along the road they travel are enough speedbumps to challenge the sanity and well-being of Job himself. Problems arise in Oregon, and the situation quickly unravels as our title characters are separated from one another. The story becomes that of their reunion, if indeed it's going to happen at all.
Michelle Williams is powerful as Wendy. She is as simple as this film's plot, and her simplicity is, at times, beautiful. The saddest stories, if done right, tend to be the most powerful; if your heart doesn't ache while watching this movie, you might not be human. Williams should have been nominated for a Best Actress Oscar instead of Angelina Jolie for "Changeling" and Anne Hathaway in "Rachel Getting Married.".
