Review of Wendy and Lucy (2008) by Rob L — 17 Sep 2011
"Never film with children or animals" so goes the dictum and if it's largely true since Lassie popped her clogs, this movie is actually a pretty terrific repudiation.
Michelle Williams and Kelly Reichardt team up as they were to do 3 years later in the affecting Meek's Cut Off and they form quite a partnership. This tale of a depressed, post-industrial US where real jobs have disappeared and the long grass thrusts upwards between the paving slabs is a quiet wonder.
The aforementioned pooch actually spends a good proportion of the film away from view as an increasingly desperate Williams tries to keep her head above water - sure, it's "depressing" but if that's a reason you'd give for not liking a film, there are plenty of hours' worth of Glee to keep you happy.
