Review of Welcome to the Sticks (2008) by Peter S — 22 Jul 2008
Despite its box office success in France (recently overtaking "Titanic" as the no.1 film of all time), I'm not sure how this will stand the test of time in years to come to be considered a true great of French cinema.
There is a quintessential "Frenchness" that adds to the whimsical feel of the storyline but the funniest moments are no doubt universal in nature: you don't need to be French to understand (or laugh).
I haven't experienced a packed audience unanimously pissing themselves with laughter (and in unison) for a long time, so as a litmus test this is right up there for sheer entertainment value. On another note (with some high school French coming back to me), I have no idea how long it took the translator to do the subtitles for this with the number of puns and play-on-words: very impressive indeed.
