Review of Welcome to the Punch (2013) by Arvinth K — 19 Mar 2013
A ridiculous, cliched script with 'twists' you can see a mile away (with a habit of explaining what's happening on screen as they don't trust you to understand what's going on),the better-than-this cast with their frankly awful cockney accents (including those of the actual Londoners), characters acting as no normal person would and a stupid number of car chases/gun fights makes this the kind of film you expect to see on Channel 5 late on a Friday night - although that might be doing a disservice to Channel 5 movies.
The director obviously is a fan of Michael Mann, and this film reminded me of Collateral, but a poor man's version. The constant use of blue filter in the cinematography was also really wearing after the first 30 minutes.
To be honest, it felt more like somebody taking the piss out of these kind of films. If it had been delivered tongue-in-cheek or as a homage then I could have got on board with it but as it was, its a poor attempt at a Hollywood heist movie that completely wastes its talented cast and woefully underestimates its audience.
