Review of Welcome to the Dollhouse (1996) by Michael F — 24 Jan 2008
One of the best films of the 90s. Saw this on the Sundance Channel when I was like 12 or 13. This one along with "KIDS" were probably THE films that caused my taste in movies to shift...
"Dollhouse" walks a fine line between painfully hilarious and flat-out sadistic, and that's ultimately what I value in a movie-going experience. It also brought back memories of adolescence and having a spoiled, conniving younger sibling and parents ready to condemn you as a lunatic whenever you lashed out against it.
Perhaps the only film that can make an attempted rape (among middle schoolers, no less) seem funny. For similar Todd Solondz arcana, rent "Happiness" along with this one and have a sleepover with lots of your friends.
