This came out when I was in sixth grade, so I took it as more than just some quirky coming-of-age film -- it was a pretty accurate summation of what junior high is like for less popular kids. Matarazzo actually looks her age, not like some attractive high schooler badly cast as a younger girl.
You believe it and find yourself thinking, "I'm glad I'm older...".
