Review of Welcome to Me (2015) by Catinca C — 03 Sep 2015
Welcome to Me is an indie comedy I found on Netflix starring Kristen Wiig as a woman with depression who wins the lottery and then decides to invest in an Oprah style talk show where she just tells her life story and does whatever she wants. The movie also stars James Marsden, Wes Bentley, and Linda Cardellini.
Things I Liked.
Kristen Wiig. Wiig has been growing a lot as an actress since her days on SNL and this movie really showed it. Her performance carries the movie and she truly shows much more depth and range than anything previous to this. She is showing that she is much more than quirky stereotypes and cheesy one liners which is something that can really drag down comedians in film. Wiig is showing that she is much more than that.
Things I Didn't Like:
The Pace and Tone. The film is boring. It's long. And by the end it is mostly forgettable. Everything seems somewhat safe and moderate and nothing really leaps out and makes you really interested in the film beyond that.
Overall. Overall the film is forgettable. While Kristen Wiig makes you see a lot of new sides to her as a performer the rest of the cast are vague and generic and the movies never really gets moving at a pace that interests you. The premise is silly and intriguing at first but then becomes boring and repetitive and tired. The film has some interesting things to say about depression and mental health but it really doesn't move forward in a lot of ways and it makes your very bored and uninterested by the end of it. If you like Indie comedies you may find more out of this than I did but I was not very impressed.
