Review of Weirdsville (2007) by Robert B — 07 Jan 2008
Two stoners (Speedman, Bentley) assume their "not-a-hooker" friend Maddie (Manning) has overdosed, and proceed to bury her in the basement of a drive-in where they encounter a ritual satanic sacrifice. Chaos ensues.
I think that any movie that introduces characters via freeze frame pictures, and text written on the screen should be banned. Seriously, has a good movie ever been made the utilizes this stylistic folly?
I will say that some of the humour in this film is well done. When the satanists are chasing Taryn Manning and commenting on her graceful running, I really did laugh. I did find the curling rock attack amusing, and the way Bentley giggled when the satanists were talking about their dark lord. For these few moments I will add a star to my final rating.
The problem with this film is excess stylizing on a low budget. The effect was offputting, and really removed the audience from wanting to continue with the film. Extended drug-taking scenes and "tripping" was also annoying. Add to this a desperate attempt to make things quirky outside of the schema the screenplay has created for itself and you have an annoying, pretentious, little indie comedy that is better suited to a Blockbuster shelf than the big screen.
Occasionally amusing, but really not very good.
