Review of Weiner (2016) by Anthony B — 21 May 2016
The world has witnessed the media's narcotic effect on Donald Trump. The documentary Weiner records the same neediness in Anthony Weiner's quixotic 2013 campaign for New York mayor-itself nearly as unbelievable as the news he texted revealing photos of himself, causing him to quit Congress.
At first, Wiener is an effective campaigner, helped by the star power of his beautiful wife, Huma Abedin, Hilary Clinton's senior aide. Then comes the bombshell, mid-campaign, he has "sexted" women after his cringe-making outing.
Like no-hopers in the presidential campaign, Wiener refuses to quit. But relentless media hostility drains him of energy and enthusiasm. Huma stops appearing with him in public and on election night he's forced to use a back door to avoid a sextee.
Yet, right to the end of his campaign, he's openly supported by blacks and Hispanics. Could this mean Weiner will be back for more?
