Review of Weekend (2011) by Erin H — 29 Jan 2012
A gay, Brit mumblecore about 2 guys who hook up and talk about themselves. It feels a bit like a queer Before Sunrise, although thankfully the characters are more likeable in this. In fact their likeabilty is the film's main asset.
The drama is fairly slight and director Haigh is content to keep the camera at a distance most of the time, unless he's honing in for one of the extraneous sex/nude scenes that seem to be there just for titillation.
Do we really need to see the main character having a bath - twice? Although its refreshing to see a film about gay characters where they're not a) coming out, b) dying of AIDS or c) being assaulted, and Weekend has a nice understated frankness about it, it lacks ambition, both as a drama and as a technical achievement.
