Review of Weddings and Babies (1960) by Richard S — 11 May 2008
Engel's (presumably) autobiographical final film benefits from vastly improved sound recording technology, but I found it less engaging than "Lovers and Lollipops". I think it's because the narrative is stronger.
I was drawn to the off-the-cuff style and focus on photographic details over more overt drama. By no means did he create a standard melodrama, but I came away from the film really liking a handful of scenes rather than the entire picture.
This could be the indirect result of watching it immediately after one of his other films. I expected a continuation of that tone, so it took me a bit to adjust my expectations. We'll see how it stands up if I watch it again in a few years.
