Review of We Were Soldiers (2002) by Joshua P — 14 Jun 2011
Based on the book WE WERE SOLDIERS ONCE...AND YOUNG by Lieutenant General Hal Moore & Joseph L. Galloway, this is a great story that I think does a very good job at showing the ugly side of war while at the same time staying focused on telling the true story of what happened.
There is one part that I think sums up the movie when Barry Pepper's character Galloway narrates saying "we were sent to war because our country told us to...but in the end we fought no for freedom, but for each other.
" Lt. Moore, played by Mel Gibson plays his character very well as hard but fair. Leading his men into what he knows will be a trap from intuition after years of experience on the battlefield, he settles in with his men who spend the next few days fighting against the Vietnamese.
It's a sad story that I think really tries to honor the lives lost on both sides and not just looking at it from an American standpoint.
