Review of We Were Soldiers (2002) by Bill F — 03 May 2013
Simply put one of the best war movies I have ever seen. Many won't give it a chance cause of the current Mel Gibson hate, which started around the time this came out, and that is a total shame.
The war scenes are amazing. It takes place at the beginning of the Vietnam War, so the sense of dread was not there yet for America about this war. The battle scenes are staged perfectly, and as each platoon begins to get surrounded and out numbered, they film it like you can feel how bad it actually was.
The score is it's own character in this film, as it is simply awesome.
And the cast. Gibson is great, but some of the supporting players are downright fantastic. Stowe, Elliott, Pepper and Hurst come to mind. But a lot of people that have gone on to bigger roles like Dylan Walsh of Nip/Tuck or Jon Hamm of Mad Men or Clark Gregg of The Avengers are all good too.
And when they do switch from the war to back home, it will probably make you cry a few times as wives are notified that have lost their husbands.
