Clint Eastwood took two great movies about the battle for Iwo Jima to show the truths revealed here in this single film about the first battle between the North Vietnamese and American forces: war is horrendous, bravery in war because of its inescapably relentless nature is among the greatest bravery to be found, and the common soldiers on both sides suffer and emerge courageous and are missed equally by their loved ones.
